Can t find unread mail
I tried everything that was mentioned but to no resolution. This resolved my issue.

I had the same issue when I installed the gmail app. The solution that worked for me after some searching, was that there apparently was some unread mail for me, hovering in limbo inbetween my inbox, my spam box and the archive. If you type "is:unread" without qoutes in the gmail search field, it will perform a search and show all unread items.
By simply opening and closing those emails, making them read, the badge disappeared.

Happy Days! Apr 6, AM. Aug 23, PM in response to atyree In response to atyree. Found a glitch in iOS 5 that allows you to mark all emails as read! It saved me the hassle of having to figure out which email was unread. Open the Mail app and click on the "Edit" button in the top right corner, then click on an email and click the button in the bottom right that says "Mark", then click on the "Mark as unread" button.
Once you've done that, you can take your finger off of the "Mark" button. Give it a second and the "Mark as read" button will appear.
Click on it and it will mark all of your unread messages as read. Aug 23, PM. Apr 19, PM in response to atyree In response to atyree.
It was quite simple for me. I hope it will help you too!

I noticed the same behaviour a few days ago following deleting some emails without opening them. Hope this helps. Another place to look. If you have some threads going, look for an old e mail you may not have opened buried inside of the thread you have since responded to. Mar 25, PM in response to pjl In response to pjl I have two accounts on my iPad. I've isolated and deleted both of them and turned them both back on to be sure that the Gmail account is question is the problem, and it is. Like I said, the thing that has me scratching my head is that I have the exact same two accounts on my iPhone and my iPad, and the iPad still reads 3 unread emails, while the iPhone shows everything as read.
As for the limits, this occured a few days ago, and new emails have since come and gone, and the iPad always reflects these 3 phantom emails, while the same activity occurs on my phone, sans the 3 emails I can't identify. The Gmail web app, the OS X Lion Mail app and my iPhone mail app all show that my inbox has no unread message, but my iPad still says that specific Gmail account has 3 unread messages. Has no one else had this problem? Apr 10, PM. Apr 15, AM in response to atyree In response to atyree. Apr 15, AM. Apr 15, PM in response to lb99 In response to lb Apr 15, PM. Customize view.
